Workshop:
If you've ever been interested in making shoes, this is for you! This basic shoemaking workshop uses a kit that comes with a pattern, thread, needle, insole, and outsole. You will build a knowledge and understanding of some shoe making tools and basic shoe construction. Never hand sewn before? No problem! You will be shown how to punch and sew leather by hand. You pick the style (low cut, mid, high top); leather colours and textures; and let your personality shine.
At the end of the workshop, you will leave with a one-of-a-kind pair of sneakers. If you do not finish, you will leave with the skills to complete your pair at home.
Kits:
The kit is sold separately. Purchase your kit online at Fabriculous or Lonsdale Leather. Please order your kit and have it delivered 1-2 weeks before class starts.
Sizing:
Order your correct size. Not sure which size to get? Have someone trace your feet in socks, while standing, and use a ruler to measure the widest points of your feet. Compare your measurements to the supplier’s chart. Have questions? Contact the supplier directly.
Leather:
For the leather, bring your own, purchase some, or upcycle an old leather bag or garment.
If you wish to purchase your own leather, check out Gala Fabrics, Michael's, Viberg Boot, Buckskin Leather (Nanaimo), and Lonsdale Leather (Vancouver). You will need about 2-2.5 sq feet. The recommended leather weight is 2-3 oz.
Sometimes, we are able to sell leather from our stash. Send us a message Contacts well in advance, so we can confirm the cost and cut the hide prior to the first class. Advance payment is required.
There will be a bag of scrap leather to practice hand sewing and for design details.
Tools:
We supply tools to share in the classroom.
